Can a mac computer run a version of windows lets sat like I heard something about windows OS is it possible???

I was wandering this because I am going into college and I was wandering if it was possible because I wanted the best of both worlds so I thought I read somewhere that a mac computer could run a windows application and then could be restarted and the person could choose to run the computer as a Macintosh is this true and is it possible.
